Sekarang pembalap MotoGP jadi harus pakai rem belakang untuk berhenti, Marquez pun terpaksa jarang sliding


Selama ini dipercaya bahwa rem belakang itu nggak ada gunanya di MotoGP selain untuk sliding untuk membantu belok. Beberapa juga mengacu pada ajaran mantan pembalap Keith Code (tidak pernah juara dunia). Ajarannya ekstrem. Sebelumnya sudah pernah dibahas:

Dibilang kalau ngerem harus cuma rem depan saja karena tenaga pengereman 100% dari ban depan. Pakai rem belakang cuma bikin celaka.

Tapi ternyata pembalap MotoGP sekarang pakai rem belakang untuk bisa menghentikan motor dengan cepat dan harus mengurangi sliding. Hal ini terpaksa dilakukan karena ada perubahan pada ban motor MotoGP.

With the Bridgestones you had to use the front tyre to do everything, because there wasn’t a lot of rear grip. But with the Michelins you have to do everything with the rear – you have to use the rear more than the front for braking, turning and acceleration.

With the Michelins you rarely see the rear tyre in the air during braking, but with the Bridgestones everybody lifted the rear on the brakes. This is because with Bridgestone it wasn’t important to keep the rear on the asphalt because the rear didn’t have the grip to help you to stop. With the Michelins you have to use the rear grip during braking.

Dijelaskan bahwa Bridgestone itu punya ban depan dengan grip bagus dan punya grip ban depan jelek. Jadinya semua harus mengandalkan grip ban depan. Sementara itu ban Michelin yang sekarang dipakai itu sebaliknya, grip ban depan jelek dan grip ban belakang bagus. Jadi untuk mengerem, menikung dan akselerasi harus mengandalkan grip ban belakang.

Saat pakai ban Bridgestone kita sering lihat ban belakang terangkat, sementara saat pakai ban Michelin tidak. Ini karena saat pakai ban Bridgestone tidak masalah bila ban belakang terangkat ke udara karena ban belakang gripnya kecil. Kalau pakai ban Michelin ban belakang harus tetap menempel lintasan agar bisa memanfaat grip ban belakang untuk berhenti.

How much did your set-up change after Aragón?
A lot. It’s difficult to explain, but we put much more weight on the rear; I just moved everything to the rear. Normally I don’t have much trouble with the front tyre because I’m quite good at feeling the limit, so I gave away a bit from the front and tried to concentrate on making the rear work really well. Now we use the rear brake and rear tyre to stop the bike and that has really helped.

But moving weight to the rear takes weight away from the front, which can hurt turning…
Yes, but if you can stop the bike you can turn, but if you can’t stop the bike then you can’t turn.

Vinales memilih untuk fokus pada pengereman daripada kemampuan untuk berbelok. Dan untuk mengerem Vinales sekarang mengandalkan rem belakang. Biar lebih mantap ia juga memindah berat motor ke belakang.

With the Ducati you have to use a lot of rear brake, especially in corner entry, because if both wheels are in line and not sliding, the bike wants to go straight to the gravel. You need to steer the bike like a boat, with the rear, to get the right direction into the corner.

Pakai Ducati mengharuskannya untuk banyak pakai rem belakang. Ia menggunakan rem belakang juga untuk sliding sehingga motor bisa belok lebih baik.

How do you get the bike turned now, because the Bridgestone front helped you to turn, so do you use the rear brake or the throttle?
It’s more about changing the geometry of the bike. When we changed from Bridgestone to Michelin I tried many things: I changed my riding style, I used more rear brake, I touched the gas earlier, I touched the gas later, I used less corner speed, I used more corner speed, but until we changed the geometry it was impossible. Now we use quite a lot of weight on the front of the bike, which leaves the rear of the bike more free. I feel better like this but maybe some other Honda riders go in the opposite way. Anyway, with a lot of weight on the front it seems like I can touch the gas earlier because the bike is more ready.

How does less weight on the rear make the bike easier to turn?
The thing with the Bridgestones is that we used more weight on the rear, because the rear was sliding more on the entry of corners and sliding more on the exits. With the Michelin you can forget a bit about this because the rear grip is always very, very good, so you can push with the rear tyre and then work on the front tyre. This is one of the reasons I always go for the hard option front for the race.

Tell us about the engine-braking control, because you don’t get as crossed-up on the brakes as you used to…
That’s because of the rear grip. The Michelin rear has better grip, so it’s more difficult to slide the rear and if you do have a slide then the slide is sharper, so if I slide on corner entry it’s a problem because the slide is too sharp and so I miss the apex.

Setelah ganti ke ban Michelin Marquez mencoba banyak hal termasuk dengan mempergunakan rem belakang lebih banyak. Namun baginya yang sangat membantu adalah dengan memindah berat motor ke depan sehingga bisa lebih siap saat akselerasi (bagian motor yang berat punya grip lebih besar, ban depan jadi lebih punya grip). Cara ini kebalikan dengan saat motor masih pakai ban Bridgestone, dimana berat motor dipindah ke belakang (ban belakang jadi lebih punya grip) karena ban belakang terlalu mudah selip saat masuk atau keluar tikungan.

Marquez juga menjelaskan bahwa sliding pakai ban Michelin itu lebih sulit. Dan begitu sliding, sudutnya jadi terlalu tajam. Bila dipaksakan ia akan jadi nggak maksimal.

Unik juga karena Lorenzo lebih banyak sliding dan Marquez mengurangi sliding. Apa kita bakal melihat adu sliding bila nanti Lorenzo jejer sama Marquez?

Rem belakang dianggap penting di MotoGP itu kata pembalap papan atas MotoGP sekarang. Kalau lebih percaya dengan ajaran bekas pembalap ya silahkan.

Menurut penulis sih lebih aman bila mengerem juga mempergunakan rem belakang. Lebih bagus lagi bila mengerem mendahulukan yang belakang dulu sehingga ban depan grip nya akan lebih bagus pada saat menekan rem depan.
