Ban belakang Michelin makin ngegrip merugikan Honda dan Ducati?


Sebelumnya penulis sudah bahas bahwa perubahan dari ban Bridgestone ke ban Michelin membuat pembalap MotoGP jadi harus lebih memperhatikan rem belakang juga, karena grip ban belakang Michelin itu hebat tapi grip ban depan payah.

Ternyata Michelin kembali memperkenalkan ban belakang yang gripnya makin hebat:

“After such an intensive and involved testing schedule we are delighted to launch the new construction rear tyre,” said Piero Taramasso, Michelin Motorsport Two-Wheel Manager.

“We have now informed Dorna and IRTA of the change and have given the teams and manufacturers the full specification and in-depth data so they can set-up the bikes to give the optimum performance from this new rear slick. This is the first change to construction for the rear for two years and an important advance in the evolution of our Michelin Power Slick tyres for MotoGP.

Dan sepertinya hasilnya akan merugikan tim Honda dan Ducati. Terbukti dari crashnya Marc Marquez dan Andrea Dovizioso.

Memang dua kali jatuhnya Marc Marquez bisa saja terjadi karena kondisi Marc Marquez yang belum maksimal, masih dalam masa pemulihan cedera operasi. Marquez mengaku kalau mengendarai motor Honda harus berkonsentrasi 200%, sementara itu Crutchlow bila naik motor Honda seperti adu fisik saat naik kerbau liar:

“If you are fighting with the bike physically it is challenging every single time you ride it, then obviously it is more difficult but sometimes I quite like grabbing the bull by the horns,” he said. “Ride like a wild man, I quite like that. I don’t always like it, I would prefer an easier life.”

Karena sedang dalam keadaan cedera, reflek anti jatuh Marquez juga jadi tumpul.

Tapi peran ban belakang bisa saja besar kalau dari penjelasannya Andrea Dovizioso:

“It was a bit strange for me to lose the front like this. I didn’t push 100% in that moment. I just opened the throttle at maximum angle at turn six and I lost the front,”

Ia mengaku bingung mengapa bisa jatuh. Saat ia ngegas, ia dalam keadaan miring banget. Setelah ngegas grip ban depan langsung hilang. Padahal nggak lagi maksimal.

Menurutnya ini bisa terjadi karena grip ban belakang yang lebih baik dari Michelin membuatnya mendorong ban depan:

“You have more grip on the rear so it’s always pushing the front. So the balance is a bit different. And with the electronics. At maximum angle you can lose the grip so quick and easy. But in the traction area you have a lot of grip. It’s difficult to manage those two points, also because you have to turn. The transition from the maximum angle to the traction area is not easy.”

Jadi saat lagi belok sangat miring mudah kehilangan grip ban depan. sementara itu waktu akselerasi grip ban belakang sangat membantu. Namun sulit untuk melakukan transisi dari sangat miring ke akselerasi.

Jack Miller bilang yang jadi kunci adalah setelan yang pas.

Honda katanya juga sedang berjuang untuk mengatasi ini, dibilang Cal Crutchlow bahwa timnya sampai bergadang:

We have to keep working, we have to keep trying to find something. We had big modifications to the bike throughout the day and throughout the night, last night we had some more modifications to improve it. It’s been a good job from my team and from Honda because every night they have been here until midnight or 2AM trying to build stuff that might work.”

Ia mengeluh (lagi) bahwa ia tidak bisa dapat feeling dari bagian depan. Ini membuatnya sulit untuk belok:

“I can’t turn the bike and it seems we have to go slower and slower every corner to go around the corner and we have to park the bike, turn it and go instead of being able to take these more sweeping lines that we need to take with the Michelin tyres.

Padahal beloknya motor Honda itu pakai model V, dan ban Michelin yang sekarang menghalangi itu:

“We are still not making the corner that we need to in order to be competitive,” he explained. “We can’t flow through the corner, we make the corner way too much like a V which was always the Honda style but at the moment with the Michelin tyres we cannot do that.

Marc Marquez juga mengatakan hal yang sama (sengaja penulis rubah urutan katanya):

“At the moment we’re struggling in some points. One of these problems is created by more grip on the rear. We must understand how to improve.

“It’s true if you use more the ‘normal’ track [cornering lines], if you have more grip you have more advantage. Riding alone and especially for one lap they are incredibly fast,” he said. “But then race distance we need to ride more like a ‘V’ in the corners: go in, stop and pick up.

Seperti ini kali ya?

“It looks like this new Michelin rear tyre changes the balance of the bike and this changes also some parametres on the electronics. It has better grip and when you gain rear grip the balance can change: the electronics and also a little bit the riding style. Some bikes will adapt better, some worse…”

Sekarang ini Honda sedang kesulitan. Salah satu masalah terjadi karena ban belakang lebih ngegrip. Memang dalam keadaan normal punya grip lebih banyak bisa membantu. Mengendarai sendiri dan cuma satu lap bisa sangat cepat. Tapi dalam balapan mereka butuh melewati tikungan dengan gaya V. Masuk tikungan, berhenti, lalu akselerasi.

Ban belakang Michelin yang baru merubah keseimbangan ini dan juga mempengaruhi setelan elektronik. Gaya berkendara juga harus dirubah. Ada motor yang bisa beradaptasi lebih mudah, dan ada yang sulit.

Yang jelas sekarang ini baik Honda maupun Ducati itu punya kelemahan di tikungan. Mereka butuhnya ban depan yang lebih ngegrip. Tapi malah dikasih ban belakang yang lebih ngegrip.

Sementara itu Yamaha terutama, punya masalah di sistem elektronik, sehingga ban belakang seringnya selip. Dengan bobot cenderung di depan, maka dengan ban belakang lebih ngegrip, bisa dipastikan Yamaha akan lebih sip dalam akselerasi.
